New 64-bit Linux under Virtualbox

Post by speleo »

I am currently running tests of your VM product on a 3-year old machine that runs Ubuntu 64-bit version 12.04 and Virtualbox 4.2.10. The processor is an Intel E5200, which is a modest processor but considerably faster than the Intel Atoms used in your 3-camera hardware box.

I see that the new (4.00) version of your VM-based NVR will be based on a 64-bit Linux. It will not be possible to run version 4.00 of your VM under Virtualbox on my E5200 processor - nor on many other lower-end CPUs that do not have built-in hardware virtualization (eg Intel VT-x): http://www.virtualbox.org/manual/ch03.h ... 4bitguests . The Intel Atom also lacks hardware virtualization but I'm guessing that the OS runs natively inside the box, so this won't be an issue for you.

While moving to a 64-bit OS will no doubt be of benefit from the software perspective, you should be aware that it will probably reduce the market of potential customers for your VM product, since the lower-end CPUs (by today's standard) are ideal for a 3-camera set-up, which would not normally require a particularly powerful CPU.

The biggest issue in IP video surveillance is CPU, disk and network performance.

Unfortunately we got a lot of support requests where people said C-MOR was loosing video frames, recordings etc. But always, in each case, we could trigger such problems down to hardware and network issue.

Old hardware is fine to play around, but not useful for professional IP video surveillance in the area we are active.

Changing the OS to 64bit was long planed and diskussed very often in many, many meetings. We are sure this was the right decision.
